Environmental Design Specialist

As the Environmental Design Specialist for Sydney you will be an active member of the studio and play an important role working closely with our design teams to ensure sustainable design and net zero commitments are embedded into the planning, design and delivery of our projects. In this role you will lead and drive sustainable design outcomes working with the Global Sustainability Group, Environment, Regenerative and Social Outcomes Portfolio in Sydney, design leads and Partners to accelerate our commitment to net zero in our designs.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide sustainable design expertise and guidance on projects (from industrial design to buildings, infrastructure and precincts) – both new and retrofit
  • Undertake building physics modelling including daylight, microclimate, façade performance and thermal comfort analysis to support design teams in integrating environmental design concepts and the assessment of building performance
  • Liaise with cost consultants to undertake cost benefit analysis of options to recommend an optimal solution
  • Lead the development, implementation, and delivery of the Sydney sustainability action plan
  • Spearhead key sustainability agendas for Australia i.e. net zero, circular economy, LCA and disseminate research knowledge to the Practice
  • Create project road maps to ensure continual improvement of sustainability performance in projects and lead and facilitate sustainability design reviews with design teams to ensure environmental design concepts are integrated
  • Deliver Grimshaw’s net zero carbon pathways training across all levels of the studio
  • Build positive relationships with government, industry and represent the Practice in sustainability matters through thought leadership at external forums and events
  • Contribute to sustainability project reporting i.e. papers and presentations to the Partners, Grimshaw Advisory Group
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Superior sustainability literacy and advanced proficiency in environmental modelling, energy assessment, thermal comfort and carbon analysis
  • Professional accreditation desired: GSAP, LEED, BREEAM or WELL, Passivhaus Certification
  • Experience with at least one of the following tools / software packages: IES-VE, Energy Plus, OpenStudio, Grasshopper, Honeybee
  • Significant industry experience in building environmental design as part of a transdisciplinary team
  • Strong collaboration, influencing and training skills with capacity to inspire change
  • Demonstrated ability to translate sustainability goals and aspirations into design outcomes for clients and stakeholders
  • Passionate about continued professional development in environmental design and analysis
