Senior Design Research Consultant 

The Role

The Senior Design Research acts as CX/UCD evangelist, leading UX research and consumer insights methods on multidisciplinary projects for our clients. She/he works with clients to understand their challenges, frustrations, and opportunities and chooses ideal research and strategy methodologies based on the specific project and client needs. Responsible for providing business-relevant, future-thinking perspectives on the client and/or product challenges. Bringing the user into the equation through research, the Senior Design Researcher is able to connect the dots between customer needs, market trends, and competitive analysis- translating the outcomes to tangible product or feature specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and conduct Design Research methods, from requirements gathering to reporting. This is inclusive of defining objectives, creating the approach and moderating and synthesizing findings. Deliverables often include: participant screeners, discussion guide/approach outlines, findings reports, and research readouts

  • Moderate different research methods including, but not limited to: usability testing, in-depth interviews, contextual studies, diary studies, ethnography, and co-creation

  • Be consultative, working directly with clients to understand their business, challenges, pain points and opportunities, continuously adding value and managing expectations

  • Be a hands-on practitioner to create high level strategy, user experiences, digital journeys, mind maps and customer insights documentation

  • Resolve complex problems through a 'hypothesis-driven' approach using a combination of top-down and bottom-up analysis

  • Prioritize product and service features, work with engineers to translate consumer and business insights into buildable product features, work with front and back end development teams in order to have actionable and tangible specifications of a feature or product

  • Creates usable solutions to problems with little or no direction

  • Collaborate with the client and present your ideas to top-level stakeholders

 

About you

  • You are a master of research moderation and foundational consulting skills, including problem framing and structuring, participatory design, heuristic evaluations, competitive testing and data analytics. You have a good working knowledge of formative & summative usability research methods, and how they are applied in a fast-moving organization that is also a deadline driven environment.

  • You are a hybrid of talent with divergent expertise that allows for problem solving that is both analytical and creative, conservative and unconventional, technical and whimsical. You uncover opportunities in unique ways.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and compellingly (ideas, concepts, strategies, plans etc), translating insights into actions. You help teams understand customer needs, attitudes, and behaviors through thoughtful and actionable research. Your work informs both strategic and tactical efforts ensuring the feasibility of your insights concepts and the fidelity of the final output.

  • Self-motivated: You work without close supervision but you seek out and welcome feedback from leaders and managers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as moderator/researcher and/or UX strategist, envisioning new solutions, consumer validations, and architecture & design definitions

  • Solid experience leading user research, concept testing, and usability testing by utilizing various methodologies, and a variety of user research methods to reveal deep insights about user/business needs and technical constraints to determine how a product should be evolved and refined

  • Identifies appropriate synthesis techniques to meet the needs of specific use case situations

  • Passion for digital product development: Experience working with product and software development teams

  • Solid understanding of practical benefits and limitations of digital technologies. Intimate knowledge of how insights translate to code

  • Stellar communication including interpersonal and writing skills

  • Bachelor's degree in HCI, Psychology, Information Science or other related field and 5 years of User Research experience, or a Master’s degree + 2 years of experience.

  • Experience working with Agile / Lean UX methodologies

  • Experience with Sketch, InVision, Adobe Creative Suite, and industry standard design tools

  • Experience designing for touch and mobile devices
