Job Description


Gideon USA is seeking a working/traveling HVAC / MECHANICAL or Civil SUPERINTENDENT. The Superintendent must be willing to travel and coordinate activities to ensure project execution is on schedule, under budget, with the highest quality, and no lost time while building subcontractor relationships.

This is a hands on working position where the Superintendent leads the day to day operations at the job site, maintains project schedules and works with inspectors and officials. In this position, the Mechanical Superintendent will provide overall direction and daily coordination of the installation of plumbing, mechanical and piping systems. The Superintendent is responsible for ensuring safety, schedule delivery, quality of work performed and adherence to the budget of the project.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with Project Manager on pushing the construction schedule, and notify them of any potential issues.
  • Work with QC to ensure that the proper meetings are conducted, documented, and paperwork submitted. Assist QC to monitor the quality of workmanship on site.
  • Work with Safety Manager to ensure that all EM385 rules and procedures are being followed.
  • Develop on site relationship with the project Construction Manager and QA on the government side. Nurture rapport with customers, but maintain a reputation for being tough on schedule, reasonable, and fair.
  • Schedule, organize, and quarterback all subcontractor activities on the job site. Develop reputation with subs as being tough, professional, and honest.
  • Manage and make decisions related to the performance of work related to scheduling, delivery, logistics, quality control and trade employee staffing levels.
  • Train and supervise workers on company policies, safety practices, regulations and installation procedures.
  • Plan the daily and weekly activities for each Mechanical craft.
  • Monitor work performance and productivity of all crafts.
  • Review, analyze and update labor hours and job cost codes.
  • Evaluate the complexity of the mechanical design and maintenance, and special allocation of systems.
  • Act as a technical resource regarding the mechanical systems.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with subcontractors and client/owner.
  • Attend meetings with owners, architects, and subcontractors. Outline work to be performed, phasing of work, quality of work, etc.
  • Inspect piping during installation and ensure all heavy pipe and mechanical equipment is in place before walls are poured.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance in resolving day-to-day construction problems.
  • Serve as the final trade technical expert on items/issues that are elevated from the field.
  • Ensure efficient project closeout.

Problem Solving

  • Learn to work with difficult people such as unreasonable inspectors and unresponsive subcontractors.
  • Establish and push a fast job site pace during the first phases of a project while following the many restrictions and regulations on a military base.
  • Maintain schedule while coordinating various activities and meetings with QC and safety, which all time up time.
  • Develop a positive teamwork atmosphere at the job trailer with the team and anyone who enters the site.

Required experience:

  • Minimum 5 years experience on commercial construction projects with previous experience as a Civil or Mechanical Superintendent.
  • Perform daily reporting, scheduling, material control, cost control and tracking for successful, timely project completion
  • Provide clear written and oral direction to direct reports
  • Ability to deal diplomatically and communicate effectively with internal and external customers at various levels within an organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a dynamic, evolving, and fast paced workload under deadlines.
  • Experience in Federal Sector Building Construction.
  • Ability to travel as required

Mechanical Superintendent: 

  • Strong understanding of technical requirements of the industry, as well as knowledge of mechanical design and planning principles and procedures.
  • Ability to install duct work, mechanical piping (copper and steel), perform start up functions and all ancillary work for projects of smaller scope (>$1m)
  • Estimate complete smaller scope (>$1m) projects

Civil Superintendent

  • Ability to read understand plans and specs
  • Ability to operate multiple machines, install minor dry utilities, perform minor concrete work, shoot grade, interpret survey data and staking, and all ancillary work for projects of smaller scope
  • Estimate complete smaller scope projects
  • Read and understand geotechnical and testing reports
  • Perform daily reporting including unit production reporting, scheduling, material control, cost control and tracking for successful, timely project completion
  • Provide clear written and oral direction to direct reports
  • CDL a plus
  • Demonstrated and proven ability to direct work and manage subcontractors, suppliers etc.
  • 2+ years working in a Federal Contractor environment.
