Director of Backend Development - CollegeHumor Media (Connected Ventures LLC, New York, NY)

 

Serve as lead developer and manager of a team of backend developers who maintain our core codebase which powers all of our web properties, administration tools, and web services. Responsible for turning user stories from our product group into technical tasks in our ticketing system, assigning those tickets to developers, and overseeing the QA and publishing process. Determine the best direction for codebase and which open source technologies to use for any specific system that needs to be built to support the business. Oversee the internal operations of our development team and maintain our source control system, our publish process, our Continuous Integration environment, and more. Use effective English communication (written and verbal) skills to actively participate in meetings and liaising with the CEO, CTO, EIC, and Head of Product. Mentor other developers. Interact with senior management. Participate in code reviews. Brainstorm with product design and management teams and help tests run smoothly and successfully. Perform object oriented design methodology and standard software design patterns. Ensure the configuration and maintenance of a LAMP stack. Ensure that logical and physical database satisfy design and optimization. Utilize an expertise in PHP 5 object oriented development. Mentor the development of junior designers in HTML/CSS/Javascript. Complete cross browser development knowledge and testing. Architect and maintain heavily trafficked, highly available production systems. Implement and enforce development methodologies and best practices. Maintain a budget and negotiate contracts with vendors. Ensure that written code is clean and well commented. Make presentations and describe technical issues in a clear way to non technical individuals.

 

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree or U.S. equivalent in Computer Science or related field plus 5 years of experience serving as a software developer working on websites.

 

Within the 5 years, must have all of the following:

 

3 years of experience as a lead or senior-level developer, with responsibility of managing the direction of a particular technology either by people management or overseeing employee's work contributions to the particular technology, on consumer-facing, branded media websites that have in excess of 5 million unique visitors per month.

 

3 years of experience working with the Scrum method of management.

 

3 years of experience developing websites using PHP, MySQL, Apache, Memcached, and MVC frameworks.

 

3 years of experience scaling up websites or web applications, including all of following: Configuring infrastructure for increased traffic; Application level caching using Memcached to reduce load on web servers and database servers; and utilizing sharding, swim lanes, and CDN offloading.

 

1 year of experience managing a development team.

 

1 year of experience working with Lucene, Google Analytics, and homegrown custom analytics and statistic gathering systems.

 

1 year of experience designing the overall development process for a tech group including deployments scripts, Quality Assurance and testing, and continuous integration environments.

 

Experience building custom algorithms for relating data and recommending content.
