About Us:

Founded in 1968 to meet the post-secondary and continuing education needs of Cecil County residents, Cecil College has been serving the community and shaping its future for more than 50 years. The College is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the governor. The College’s fifth president, Dr. Mary Way Bolt, reports directly to the Board of Trustees.

Cecil College is centrally located in Maryland’s most northeastern county, just one half mile from Interstate 95. It is easily accessible from Philadelphia and Baltimore, as well as from Wilmington, Delaware.

With a diverse student population, Cecil College enrolls approximately 2,500 credit students and 3,400 non-credit students. Cecil offers associate degrees, certificate programs and non-credit classes. Cecil offers a variety of associate degree and certificate programs.

General Responsibilities: 

Tutors in the Cecil College Writing Center support all members of the college community with their reading and writing endeavors across all disciplines, with a focus on helping students develop their knowledge, confidence, and efficacy as readers and writers. Writing Center tutors may also serve as embedded tutors in introductory English courses at the College. 

This is a part-time position with flexible scheduling and the opportunity to work up to 15 hours per week. Given the interaction with students, this position requires in-person presence.

Specific Duties:

The Writing Center tutor:

  • supports students from all areas of the College at any stage in their reading and/or writing process;
  • leads one-on-one in-person and online consultations with students; 
  • works closely and collaboratively with students to identify their needs and provide reading- and writing-related coaching and individualized instruction; 
  • maintains thorough, consistent records of consultations and provides status updates to faculty as requested;
  • stays up-to-date on all materials and technology available in the Writing Center; 
  • attends staff meetings and completes periodic training assignments; 
  • participates in Writing Center outreach efforts (e.g. classroom visits) and performs other duties as assigned. 

The Writing Center tutor may also serve in the role of embedded tutor in introductory English courses. In this capacity, the tutor attends class meetings, engages with students during in-class writing workshops, provides small-group instruction on writing-related topics during class lab sessions, and supports students one-on-one outside of class time. 


Requirements:

  • Education: Master’s degree in English, education, or a related field. Bachelor’s degree in English or related field with significant teaching/tutoring experience and/or significant progress toward a graduate degree also considered. 
  • Skills/Proficiencies: Commitment to working with a diverse and dynamic student body. Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as outstanding interpersonal, time management, and customer service skills. Familiarity with academic writing conventions, college-level research strategies, and MLA and APA styles. Comfort with technology and enthusiasm to learn new programs. Willingness to take direction and work independently. 
  • Daytime and evening availability. Position may be stationed at the North East Campus or Elkton Station. 


This position has a start date of mid August 2022. The position will be posted until filled.
