JOB SUMMARY:
The IT System Administrator supports the College’s day-to-day IT operations by assisting in the setup, maintenance, monitoring, and support of the institution’s server infrastructure and core systems. Working under the supervision of senior IT staff, this role focuses on maintaining the stability, security, and availability of key IT services—including user authentication, storage, backups, and Microsoft 365 environments.
The IT System Administrator plays a key role in responding to technical issues, maintaining documentation, and participating in infrastructure projects. Additionally, as a crucial part of the College's incident response team, the IT System Administrator supports the efficacy and readiness of technology disaster recovery plans.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in the setup, configuration, and maintenance of Windows Server systems, virtual machines (VMware), and cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure, Entra ID).
- Support basic administration of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and file/print services under the guidance of senior administrators.
- Monitor server health and apply routine updates and patches to ensure system stability and security.
- Help manage user accounts, permissions, and group policies in coordination with IT security protocols.
- Provide Tier 2 support for issues escalated from the Help Desk, particularly related to system access, login errors, and file storage.
- Participate in the backup and recovery process, including testing and logging restore operations.
- Maintain documentation for system configurations, standard operating procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
- Assist with Microsoft 365 administration, including basic support for Exchange Online, OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint.
- Participate in infrastructure-related projects and training assignments as directed.
- Escalate complex issues to senior staff and participate in team-based resolution efforts.
- Follow best practices and policies related to cybersecurity, change management, and data privacy (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA).
- Participate in routine IT maintenance windows and scheduled system updates.
- Assist in ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of critical systems and services, including network infrastructure, data storage, and server environments.
- Implement best practices for disaster recovery, business continuity, and cybersecurity to safeguard college data and assets.
- Participate in regular risk assessments and implement controls to mitigate potential threats and vulnerabilities, as directed.
- Serve on College committees and/or external committees as directed by the supervisor and/or Chief Information Officer.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- Associate degree.
- One (1) year of related experience in an IT support or infrastructure role.
- Familiarity with Windows Server, Microsoft 365, or virtualization tools preferred.
- IT certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, Microsoft Fundamentals) are desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Basic understanding of Microsoft Windows Server environments, Active Directory, and virtualization technologies.
- Exposure to or coursework in cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
- Familiarity with IT security concepts and safe computing practices.
- Interest in learning network concepts including DNS, DHCP, routing, and VLANs.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with a willingness to learn.
- Ability to follow technical instructions and standard procedures.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and customer service orientation.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Commitment to professional growth and continuous learning.
SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work a varied schedule during critical periods including evenings Saturdays, and Sundays.
- Due to the need of interaction with students, employees and the college community this position requires in-person presence. This position is eligible for telework of one day per week.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to lift and move up to a maximum of 50 lbs. The physical activity of this position includes, but is not limited to: climbing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pulling, lifting, grasping, twisting and sitting.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office or meeting and training rooms, e.g., use of safe work place practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire and building safety regulations, and traffic signals when driving.
- This position supports information technology at Cecil College’s main campus in North East, MD, its additional location in Elkton, MD and all additional instructional sites. Travel between these locations is required.

This is a exempt, non-overtime eligible position; Grade 114 (pay scale:$54,066-86,505r). The budgeted salary for the position is $54,000-$60,000 . Applicants initial salary placement is based on internal equity and relevant candidate experience.
