Capital Village Public Charter Schools is seeking a dynamic, experienced and successful school leader for our brand new EL Education micro-school opening in Washington, DC.

This is a unique opportunity to plan and build during the 2018-2019 school year and then launch and lead during the 2019-2020 school year.

The Founding Principal is the instructional leader of CVPCS. Working under the direction of the Executive Director, the Principal implements the instructional vision of the middle school, consistent with the Capital Village philosophy, mission, values, and goals of the school. S/he oversees the day-to-day activities of the educational program and is the first point of contact for teachers and parents.  The Principal, in consultation with the Executive Director, is responsible for the hiring, training, and evaluation of faculty. Throughout the planning year, the principal will design structures and systems for the overall success of the academic program. To prepare our principal for a new position at an EL Education school, some of the planning year will be spent in leadership training, including attending EL Education leadership institutes and related opportunities. This position starts in June, with the principal participating in our July summer pilot program. This is a 12-month position which is exempt and therefore not eligible for overtime pay under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

 

Essential Duties: The principal will...

Planning Year

From July 2018 to May 2019, the Founding Principal will work in partnership with the Capital Village Board of Directors, Advisory Council, EL Education and the Executive Director to:

  • Lead the development of the instructional program by building on the key principles of the Capital Village model.

  • Lead the development of curriculum, core practices, culture, assessment, and systems to be used by founding staff.

  • Hire skilled and diverse founding staff for the Fall 2019 opening.

  • Develop school policies, systems, and structures to ensure the model is implemented with fidelity.

  • Facilitate student and family recruitment & outreach to ensure the school opens with 5th and 6th grade fully enrolled.

  • Plan and lead professional learning and team building experiences for founding staff, including a two-week summer institute.

  • Engage in professional learning experiences, including EL Education Leadership development.

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Lead curriculum development with a focus on EL Education and personalized learning and review expedition plans developed by teachers to provide detailed feedback.

  • Ensure Capital Village teachers understand and fully implement the curriculum as detailed in the curriculum frameworks.

  • Ensure that instruction is effective and meets the needs of diverse learners.  Ensure teachers employ techniques of pedagogy in alignment with EL Education and Capital Village personalized learning frameworks.

  • Observe classrooms on a monthly basis and provide regular feedback to teachers, including monthly check-ins.  Provide instructional coaching based on personalized professional development goals. Set up instructional improvement plans as necessary.

  • Develop instructional schedules for classes, special subjects, and inclusion.  Ensure common planning time for teachers. Ensure schedules support instructional and curricular goals and revise as needed.  

  • Ensure equity in instructional delivery.  Promote the school-wide belief that all students can learn and achieve at high levels.

  • Lead the Academic Leadership Team.  Select teachers to participate and coordinate schedules and agendas.  

  • Work closely with the Student Services Team in implementing a restorative justice discipline policy that maintains high standards and expectations for all students for responsible behavior. Foster a positive school atmosphere in which all students feel safe, cared for, and accountable.

Professional Development (PD)

  • Plan and facilitates a  two-week summer institute for staff with input from EL Education school designer and Executive Director.

  • Work with the Academic Leadership Team to create a yearlong schedule for Wednesday PD.  Ensure professional development aligns with school-wide goals.

  • Facilitate Wednesday PD.  Utilizes teacher leaders and outside experts.  Include staff rituals and community building as part of PD.

  • Facilitate individualized PD plans and micro-credentialing for all instructional staff.

  • Provide all staff members with opportunities for outside professional development.  Seek to connect staff with professional development in line with personal goals.

  • Ensure that all teachers are trained in effectively educating diverse learners, including students with special needs, English Language Learners, and at-risk students.

Personnel & Human Resources

  • Design and lead the hiring process for all staff, in consultation with the Executive Director.

  • Foster a collaborative and professional environment in which every faculty and staff member feels supported, valued, and empowered.

  • Ensure all faculty and staff adhere to professional ethics and behavior as well as address failure to adhere.

  • Nurture and maintain partnerships with community organizations.

Assessments

  • With the Academic Leadership team, monitor students’ academic growth through formative assessments, internal benchmark assessments, and external state testing.

  • Ensure that teachers assess student learning and use data to inform instruction. Support teachers in using learning targets as an effective assessment for learning strategy.

  • Ensure that teachers provide up to date assessment information and data to parents and conduct student-led conferences twice a year.

  • Coordinate standardized testing for the school.  Attend district training. Inform parents and teachers of testing.  Create the schedule and oversee test administration. Ensure test security.

Qualifications: An ideal candidate will have...

  • At least three years of school leadership experience as a principal, assistant principal, director, or chief role.

  • At least five years of teaching experience in an urban setting, preferably at the middle school level.

  • Significant training and documented experience in providing regular observation and feedback, executing professional development, providing oversight in curriculum development, implementation, and assessment required.

  • Success implementing blended learning and EL Education preferred.

  • Experience in school founding preferred.

  • Proven track record of success with building a strong school culture in urban settings.

  • Proven track record of nurturing and maintaining partnerships with community organizations preferred.

  • An entrepreneurial drive, comfortable with ambiguity and excited about innovation.

Educational Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree or higher in educational leadership or related area

  • Hold or eligible for a D.C. Principal Certification
