Lead Victim Witness Coordinator

Job Summary

The Victim Witness Coordinator-Lead is a member of the victim witness team, serving as a liaison between victim, witnesses, and the prosecuting attorney’s office, ensuring they are informed, supported, and prepared throughout the legal process. The position involves providing advocacy, assistance, and guidance to victims and witnesses of crimes while maintaining compliance with legal and ethical standards.

In addition to the responsibilities of a Victim Witness Coordinator, this lead position also supervises, coach and mentors other members of the victim witness services unit.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and supervise a team of victim witness coordinators.
  • Assign cases and ensure efficient workload distribution amount team members
  • Assists in hiring and evaluations of unit members.
  • Provide training on victim advocacy best practices and legal procedures
  • Assesses current services, identifies opportunities for improvement, and recommends enhancements

Support and Advocacy

  • Contacts the victim to assess their condition and needs, offering information, support, referrals to social service agencies, shelter resources, legal system assistance and other necessary aid
  • Provide emotional support and crisis intervention for victims and witnesses
  • Explains victim rights, legal procedures, processes and terminology
  • Acts as a liaison between the victim and prosecuting attorney, providing updates on case decisions and developments while conveying the victim’s concerns, reactions, and preferences to the attorney
  • Escort victims and witnesses to hearings and trials, ensuring they are informed and feel safe
  • May provide transportation for victims to shelters, medical appointments, counseling services, court proceedings, or other necessary aid

Resource Connection & Safety Planning

  • Assists victims in applying for protective orders, compensation and restitution
  • Connects victims with counseling, shelters, financial assistance, or other support services
  • Helps victims implement safety security measures, including jail releases notifications, emergency phones, safety alarms and other protective resources

Administrative Duties

  • Ensures victim impact statement is complete and distributed to all relevant parties
  • Sets appointment with attorneys
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date victim information files

Other Duties

  • Performs all work duties and activities following County policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • On Call after regular work hours to respond to emergency situations.
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Skills and Abilities

  • Collaborates effectively with colleagues and the public to deliver high quality and efficient public service.
  • Learn and apply County and Prosecuting Attorney Policies regarding safe work practices in dangerous, hazardous and stressful conditions
  • Manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, schedule activities and meet deadlines efficiently
  • Build and maintain effective communication and working relationships with crime victims, police officers, and prosecuting attorneys, even in stressful or high-risk situations
  • Quickly and accurately assess individuals and situations
  • Efficiently manage multiple tasks simultaneously, handle interruptions, and promptly return to complete tasks

Special Qualifications

  • Idaho Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Prosecuting Attorney investigation.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred; and
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in victim advocacy, criminal justice, or social services
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role is strongly preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and collegiate education which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information
  • Visual acuity, with or without an accommodation, to read instructions, review and organize documents
  • Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment to accomplish tasks
  • Ability to lift 15 lbs
