Weekend news editor

Job Description

Insider Inc. is looking for a weekend news editor who is quick, passionate about breaking news, and who has a knack for telling stories in a relatable and compelling way.

The weekend editor will manage a small team of reporters and interns who help cover weekend shifts. These reporters will file mainly breaking news, and also news analysis and features. Their editor should be comfortable regularly handling this mixture of story edits.

The weekend news editor is also responsible for making the homepage pop on the weekend, and pays attention to what readers are loving. This editor will work Saturday and Sunday, as well as three days during the week. 

The ideal weekend editor will:

  • Show excellent news judgment
  • Have the ability to write and edit quickly and accurately
  • Assign and edit a mix of articles, including short news posts and long-form reported pieces (he or she can also write and report themselves as time allows)
  • Have a few years of experience covering news for a digital publication
  • Be very organized--weekends require a lot of forward planning throughout the week
  • Have familiarity with social media distribution
