Director of Data and Analytics Products

Data | New York, NY | Full Time

Job Description

Business Insider and Insider create stories that inform and inspire people. Data and analysis help guide our business at Insider, Inc., ensuring that our teams can deliver our stories to our fans as quickly and effectively as possible. Analytics practices exist throughout our business units. Our job is to build the tools and connect the trends to help them beat their goals.

The role

Are you passionate about using data and analytics to help inform business decisions, but not blindly driven by them? Are you able to wrangle multiple data sources into a cohesive narrative, yet wary of monolithic 18 month data warehouse projects, opaque “data lakes”, and analysis paralysis? Do stakeholders actively seek you out for guidance, advice, and coffee because you’ve quickly been able to build data products that let them run their businesses with ease? Can you conceive of an agile strategy for data tools and products — not projects — that teach an entire company to fish and works within the agile development methodology?

We are looking for an owner and a leader to take charge of our data products team and strategy, arm the company with the tools it needs to troubleshoot sticky revenue, traffic, or performance issues and make informed decisions. You’ll be a part of the leadership team of our product and technology organization, a trusted advisor, helping all of us make better decisions more quickly.

What you will do

  • Hire, develop and retain a team of talented professionals to deliver data products to our stakeholders that allow them to run their businesses

  • Connect the team's work to measurable outcomes that make an impact for our customers and our business

  • Cultivate a rich data environment where more isn’t necessarily better, data integrity and quality matters, and delivering credible insight is the ultimate outcome

  • Operate in time-sensitive environment with competing deadlines, appropriately prioritize the short and long term paths based on an Agile development process

  • Ensure every product we ship has tracking and beacons to easily and discretely measure their effectiveness

  • Possess expertise in end-to-end data analytics processes from ETL to business analysis and board-level presentations

  • Ability to discern trends and guidance from a variety of data sources without spending weeks on number-crunching

  • Be highly conversant in the KPIs and business drivers of a highly diverse set of business units, from subscriptions to e-commerce, programmatic advertising to social platform revenue sharing

Skills you will need

  • 5-7 years experience of building data products at scale

  • Owning and evangelizing a product-first strategy for data and analytics products and tools, company-wide

  • Experience with large-scale digital media publishers

  • Recruiting, leading and developing teams, whether direct reports, matrixed colleagues or stakeholders

  • Deep muscle memory of Agile development methodology and processes

  • Experience in SQL, Python or R

  • Manipulating data sets through statistical software or other methods

  • Telling stories with data, beyond presenting spreadsheets, dashboards or charts

  • Ability to command a room with authority, authenticity, credibility and collegiality
