Founded in 2004, Brilliant Corners provides innovative housing and housing-related services to California’s most vulnerable individuals, with an emphasis on those transitioning from, or at risk of, homelessness or institutionalization. We develop, own and manage multi-family supportive housing and licensed residential care homes, and implement a broad array of scattered-site, one-on-one supportive housing, and clinical case management programs through partnerships with developmental services, homeless services, veterans’ services and health care sectors.

The Maintenance Technician/Custodian will provide maintenance and janitorial services for residential and commercial spaces as well as common areas at Octavia Court. The Maintenance Technician/Custodian will work directly with the Community Manager to address maintenance and janitorial concerns in and around the building. Must have a flexible approach to carrying out job responsibilities, be a good problem solver, and enjoy providing great customer service to a diverse population of people needing special housing supports.
Work a minimum of 24 hours a week in addition to on-call night and weekend coverage as needed.
Oversee building operations and community safety by responding to potential or actual emergencies in absence of Community Manager.
Respond to unscheduled maintenance and janitorial emergencies providing either cleaning or temporary or long-term repairs as the situation dictates.
Perform janitorial activities including removing trash, recycling, and compostable waste; taking waste containers out to the curb and bringing them back into the building; sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming of floors; wiping down toilets and sinks in common areas and commercial space; sweeping in front of exterior building doorways; dusting window copverings; and cleaning wondows and mirrors.
Perform skilled and semi-skilled carpentry and maintenance/renovation activities depending upon area of assignment including performing trade activities such as electrical, painting, plumbing, framing, demolition, gutter cleaning, etc.
Meet with the Community Manager on each regular work day to discuss work orders and assignments.
Complete service requests promptly and professionally.
Diagnose problems and determine the most cost-effective method of repairing items generated through work orders.
Report inventory of maintenance and janitorial supplies to the Community Manager and request required materials and tools in advance.
Complete preventative maintenance assignments as needed.
Monitor and report on potential safety hazards or concerns.
Monitor the overall condition of the buildings and grounds and make recommendations for future repair and cleaning projects intended to enhance the property or to prolong the useful life of building systems, appliances, finish materials, etc.
Inspect for building repairs, make simple repairs, and escalate more complex repairs to the Community Manager to contract out.
Take appropriate safety precautions in the performance of all maintenance and custodial duties.
Submit completed work orders, inventory needs, reports (expenses, etc.) and timesheets timely.
Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- General carpentry, plumbing, and electrical knowledge
- Janitorial knowledge and experience, including use of personal protective equipment.
- Verbal and written communication skills in order to read and follow product and equipment directions safely
- Careful attention to detail to maintain high quality standards and safety guidelines
- Time-management skills and awareness of critical deadlines
- Basic mathematical reasoning skills to measure correct proportions and dimensions
- Ability to work independently and follow supervisor directions
- Ability to work with persons with developmental disabilities, understand the challenges they face, be considerate of each individuals’ special needs, and respect their privacy in their home.
