About This Position:

The Director of Project Management is the leader of Bottle Rocket’s Project Management discipline. As such, he or she is responsible for building and managing a team of project managers who can proactively manage projects and mitigate risks to ensure the successful delivery of services for our clients.  In addition to leading the project management discipline, the Director of Project Management is a member of Bottle Rocket’s Key Management group, actively contributing to development of company-wide strategic and tactical plans and policies. The Director of Project Management reports to the Vice President, Operations.


Services Delivery

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate all project management and resource allocation efforts of the company
  • Oversee and manage the company’s project managers in their work on client engagements
  • Review high-level deliverables for quality and consistency
  • Review projects regularly to ensure successful completion on time and on budget
  • Work collaboratively with leaders of other disciplines (strategy, creative, software development and quality assurance) to coordinate and ensure successful completion of projects
  • With the assistance of the Resource Manager, conduct regular resource forecasting, planning & work assignment allocation
  • Administer and evaluate the systems and tools used by the project management discipline

Practice Development

  • Develop, evaluate and refine an effective project delivery methodology, and ensure its consistent adoption and application by all project managers
  • Develop and implement an ongoing program to identify and mitigate internal and external risks to on-time, on-budget, high-quality services delivery
  • Identify industry best practices in project management and ways to increase client satisfaction and deepen client relationships, and communicate them both within and outside the project management discipline
  • Provide ongoing mentorship and training to project managers for professional skills development and implementation of best practices
  • Evaluate project results to continually improve team understanding and adoption of significant lessons learned

Financial Management

  • Analyze and forecast profitability, revenue, margins, bill rates and utilization across the Operations group
  • Ensure that billing milestones are met on a timely basis
  • Assist with addressing and resolving billing issues
  • Help to ensure that the Operations group meets or exceeds its planned financial objectives

Personnel Management and Leadership

  • Assess individual project manager growth and development needs; provide direction, coaching and mentoring as necessary; conduct formal and informal performance reviews
  • Hire and, when necessary, terminate project managers
  • Communicate and demonstrate by example Bottle Rocket’s core values to the project management discipline
  • Promote team building, teamwork and motivation
  • Advise the Key Management group on the status, progress and risk assessment of current projects
  • Develop and implement strategic objectives for the project management discipline that are aligned with the company’s strategic initiatives
  • Work with the company’s business development team to forecast availability of project resources and create statements of work
  • Represent the project management discipline to prospects and clients as needed



  • At least 10 years experience in project management, including at least 5 years developing and leading a successful project management office or practice group
  • At least 2 years experience working in an agency or similar environment in which the primary project stakeholders are external clients
  • At least 2 years experience working in an interactive or software development company
  • Demonstrated record of regularly delivering complex software projects on-time and on-budget
  • Experience working and managing teams in a Lean or Agile environment
  • Has previously managed 8+ direct reports
  • Has managed studio of a mix of 50+ designers and developers

Educational Background

  • BA or BS degree (MBA or equivalent a plus)
  • PMP, CSM or similar industry-recognized certifications preferred
