One of the most prestigious and well-known universities is seeking a General Accountant. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical and general accounting assistance to the Assistant Director of Finance. Primary responsibilities include processing the general ledger month-end closing including coordination with internal and external data customers and suppliers, internal and external financial reporting, liaising with finance department contacts and providing support for the faculty departments. The ideal candidate has five to eight years of general accounting experience. The company offers a great work environment!

General Accountant Pay and Benefits:

General Accountant Responsibilities:

  • Record revenue and expenses into accounting ledgers in accordance with our policies and generally acceptable accounting principles and practices.
  • Create and interpret complex financial statements and reports with a thorough analysis of budget variance.
  • Prepare an analytical analysis for the monthly financials.
  • Review accounting ledgers on a monthly basis to insure that revenue and expenses are properly recorded.
  • Assist accountants II to ensure that they meet our policies and generally acceptable accounting principles and practices.
  • Manage stakeholder communications dealing with sensitive financial and HIPAA related issues.
  • Reconcile University accounting ledgers for all departments on a monthly basis to ensure that clearing accounts are reflected accurately. Prepare reconciling journal entries as necessary.
  • Perform other reconciliations of cash, revenue, claims, and A/R accounts as needed.
  • Manage the reconciliation of financial reports, balance sheet items, compensation and other information for the departments.
  • Participation in the budget process:
    • Aid in the preparation of operational as well as capital budgets on an annual basis.
    • Monitor monthly budget variance reporting and analysis.
  • Accounting Liaison: Assist management in identifying and communicating their financial management needs.
  • Assist in identifying and developing necessary systems to ensure accurate, complete and timely accounting treatment of information.

General Accountant Qualifications:

  • 5-8 years of general accounting experience.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree with a major in accounting, business administration or closely related field or equivalent experience.
  • Healthcare experience is preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and practices·
  • Working knowledge of fund accounting and healthcare accounting is preferred.
  • Written communication skills to prepare clear and concise correspondence at a level appropriate for the intended audience; effectively communicate findings and adjustments both orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word. Knowledge of Syntellis and SQL is preferred.
  • Demonstrate the ability to act with minimal supervision in problem identification resolution.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage and complete numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of management reporting and financial statement preparation.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills to establish and maintain professional working relationships and to communicate effectively in resolving problems and explaining procedures to co-workers, department representatives and vendor representatives.
  • Skill in keying data into the existing computer system accurately and quickly.
  • Demonstrated skill in financial analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to reconcile departmental records to system reports.
  • Skill in training departmental personnel in the proper way to complete forms.
  • Working knowledge of University accounting policies and procedures and ability to read and understand University ledgers.
  • Ability to comply with Departmental Financial Policies and Procedural manual, set and adjust priorities to meet recurring deadlines, work independently and follow through assignments and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and other office personnel and with outside departments.

General Accountant Shift:

  • Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
