Business Entity Finance Director*

Involves the provision of patient-level financial and clinical data and analysis to inform the medical center or health system's operational, financial and strategic decision making. Includes the development of a case-based operating budget for patient volume, detailed utilization projections and gross revenue. Oversees the service line profitability reporting, provides guidance on the cost accounting system structure, and the decision support system integration of clinical and financial data in a patient-centric repository. Provides for the measurement and benchmarking of business operations in relation to best business practices for the healthcare industry and internal business objectives.

Generic Scope:

Manages a highly specialized technical function/team. Has significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals from key executives in the organization. Determines objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Determines strategies for a program with organization-wide impact.

The Business Entity Director will be responsible for providing financial analysis and reporting. Reporting to the Vice President Finance, this position will lead the following:

FINANCIAL PLANNING - OPERATING AND CAPITAL BUDGET, 10-YEAR PLAN

  • Delivery of business entity budget
  • Coordinating, prioritizing, and reviewing business entity capital projects
  • Providing strategic support to shared services in delivering the business entity 10-year plan

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND FINANCIAL REPORTING

  • Interpret and analyze business entity, business and service line reports to inform operations leadership and strategy
  • Financial performance management by cost center by entity
  • Benchmark analysis and report review for all cost centers to guide in action planning and budget targets
  • Strategic oversight by leading organizational committees and coordination between business lines and business entities

FINANCIAL AND STRATEGIC INVESTMENT

  • Strategic leadership and governance on major investments, in coordination with business line

COST ACCOUNTING

  • Report out business entity data, generate ad-hoc drill-down reports to provide further insight to operations and leadership
  • Functional and business ownership of business entity data; data governance review and sign-off; system upgrades and testing

The successful candidate will work closely with senior leadership, medical center and faculty practice finance teams, decision support professionals, department managers, and outside consultants.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 7 years of healthcare experience in finance/budgeting or Public Accounting experience wih focus on healthcare clients
  • Experience at finance controller-level
  • Understanding of finance in an academic medical center environment: financial statements, volume-based forecasting process, and hospital-faculty practice relationship
  • Strong leadership, relationship building, influencing and negotiation skills, including the ability to work effectively across all levels of management and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with high proficiency, both verbally and in writing, in both technical language and layman’s terms
  • Must be a team player with proven ability to interact well with all levels of management and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with little guidance using good analytical and political judgment in dealing with a wide variety of administrators, physicians and managers in an academic healthcare institution
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly synthesize information and develop recommendation for senior leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to influence thinking or gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations
  • Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and to formulate pragmatic and effective solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in a virtual and matrixed team environment
  • Experience developing and mentoring staff
  • Ability to work under time constraints, meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and working with detailed information
  • Computer proficiency in an established financial reporting tool; experience with EPSi or another hospital decision support software application is desirable
  • Excellent Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills
  • Must be flexible and have a positive attitude, and a sense of humor is highly desirable
  • The flexibility to orient and work at various locations is required

Education:

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Finance or related field
  • Preferred: Master's or other advanced degree

Rate: $120-140 per hour                6-8 month contract                San Francisco, CA 94143
