Mechanical Engineer

Engineering | Berkeley, CA | Full Time

Job Description

This is one of the foundational roles in the first wave of technical hires into Atomic Machines.  We are looking for a handful of very seasoned individual contributor mechanical engineers.  By "very seasoned," we mean multiple successful experiences leading (in the technical, not management, sense) precision mechanical products from concept to market.

More specifically, we are looking for:

  • At least a BS in mechanical engineering;

  • At least 15 years of commercial mech-e experience where you have designed, prototyped and commercialized (DFM through market launch and scaling) at least two complex precision mechanical systems products, at least one of which was ultimately successful.  Many people have worked on a various phases of numerous projects, but we're looking for the leads who took the projects from concept to market and thus closed the learning loop.

  • Inventiveness.  Atomic Machines is an invention company.  We're doing things that have no outside roadmap to refer to, so we need folks who enjoy charging into uncertainty, mapping out the solution space and finding clever solutions.

  • Ownership.  We need teammates who know how to own things and thrive in an ownership culture.  This means self-starting, never losing sight of objectives and powering through obstacles to find great answers.

Bonuses:

  • Precision motion control with optical alignment;

  • Laser and/or optics experience;

  • Inkjet printing experience in the sense of additive manufacturing;

  • Packaging (especially MEMS packaging);

If this sounds like you, please apply.  You'll enjoy working with a truly remarkable set of teammates in a wonderfully collaborative and driven environment on an ambitious, world-changing mission.  And happily, our West Berkeley lab and office space is just across the street from Whole Foods and Philz Coffee and a couple blocks from two great local breweries (Gilman Brewing and Fieldwork).
