Vice President, Strategy and Business Development
Strategy & Business Development | New York, NY | Full Time | From $160,000 to $210,000 per year
About ASCAP
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is a membership association of more than one million songwriters, composers and music publishers, and represents some of the world’s most talented music creators. Founded and governed by songwriters, composers and publishers, it is the only performing rights organization in the U.S. that operates on a not-for-profit basis. ASCAP licenses a repertory of over 20 million musical works to hundreds of thousands of businesses that use music, including streaming services, cable television, radio and satellite radio and brick and mortar businesses such as retail stores, hotels, clubs, restaurants and bars. ASCAP collects the licensing fees; identifies, matches and processes trillions of performances every year; and returns nearly 90 cents of every dollar back to its members as royalties. The ASCAP blanket license offers an efficient solution for businesses to legally perform ASCAP music while respecting the right of songwriters and composers to be paid fairly. ASCAP puts music creators first, advocating for their rights and the value of music on Capitol Hill, driving innovation that moves the industry forward, building community and providing the resources and support that creators need to succeed in their careers.

This person will lead key areas of business development and drive collaboration and execution against a range of cross-functional strategic initiatives. We are looking for an impact-driven team player, excited about developing a diverse set of strategic capabilities at the intersection of music, media, data and technology.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Develop new and existing partnerships, including creating or modeling any necessary supporting analysis, drafting, negotiating, and presenting deal terms for internal cross-functional input and buy-in, identifying and recommending creative approaches where necessary, and driving these deals and renewals to completion.
- Accelerate ASCAP’s evolution and enhance the organization’s competitive positioning by analyzing and developing recommendations related to industry trends, the competitive landscape, growth opportunities and internal performance to shape and inform ASCAP strategy.
- Lead analyses to drive key strategic decisions, growth initiatives and business development opportunities.
- Drive cross-departmental internal task forces that advance priority initiatives.
- Provide support for annual department budget submission, including tracking financials and developing models.
- Lead strategic assessments of operational enhancement opportunities, optimizing the use of ASCAP’s resources unlocking new efficiencies and impact.
- Create concise presentation materials for Senior Management and the Board, translating complex analyses into clear insights to support strategic initiatives.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 15 years of relevant professional experience from one or more of the following areas: top-tier management consulting firm, investment banking, corporate development, business development or in-house strategy roles. Experience in the media or entertainment industries is a strong plus but not required.
- At least 6 years of experience leading and managing complex deal negotiations, ideally across a meaningful volume or “book” of deals. While most candidates will have gained this experience in a business development context, we welcome candidates with comparable expertise from other paths.
- Demonstrated experience in strategy work is strongly preferred. This could include holding a formal strategy role (e.g. in consulting or an internal strategy team) or leading strategic initiatives within another function – such as developing market analyses, building investment theses, or crafting strategic presentations to support new business opportunities. Candidates show a strong track record of contributing to high-level strategic thinking.
- Demonstrated engagement with generative AI technologies is required. Candidates should bring a thoughtful, hands-on perspective – whether through championing adoption, applying AI in their work, or actively experimenting with new tools. An ideal candidate will also understand AI’s broader implications, including risks to creative professions and organizational integrity.
- Creative, strategic and analytical thinker with the ability to critically examine details and interpret the impact of key business drivers. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Skilled communicator who can effectively engage diverse audiences – both cross functionally and externally.
- Ability to create compelling presentations tailored for executive audiences.
- Strong project manager with the ability to form goals and follow through with internal and external parties.
- Proven ability to influence stakeholders and align them toward shared outcomes.
- Strong work ethic and a bias towards action, results, and forward momentum.
- Entrepreneurial spirit with a drive to make a meaningful impact.
- Expert level proficiency with PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel.
- Required: strong skill set in quantitative analysis, including financial modeling.
- Familiarity with, or connections to, startup, accelerator, or VC ecosystems.
- BA and MBA strongly preferred.
