How this role contributes

As a Design Researcher, you will work alongside a group of talented researcher and design consultants on a wide variety of projects across many areas including technology, healthcare, education, social impact and more. You work directly with clients and your team to help solve complex problems by channeling your passion for the human perspective and your expertise with a range of research methods to discover insights and translate them into design opportunities that are meaningful and actionable.

Your focus is hands-on, on the front lines doing the exceptional work that directly impacts our ability to deliver consistently high quality on each project. You will:

  • Conduct generative and evaluative user research using techniques such as rapid ethnography, interviewing, heuristic analysis, participatory design, and concept value testing.
  • Conduct secondary research, including trends analysis and other forms of domain research, to rapidly develop an understanding of complex topics, and be able to reflect that understanding to both clients and team members.
  • Synthesize insights from primary and secondary research, represent them in a compelling but thorough way, and turn them into design inspiration.
  • Apply iterative evaluation techniques to help the team optimize concepts for the best possible experience.
  • Work collaboratively with designers to develop innovative solutions to a wide variety of design opportunities.

  • 3-5 years of experience in human-centered design, product design, or innovation as a design researcher or design strategist
  • Previous design consulting experience either for external or internal clients/teams, with preference for candidates who have worked in similar environments
  • Demonstrated mastery of multiple qualitative / quantitative research methods, with deep expertise in at least one focus area (e.g. ethnography, design research, etc.)
  • Expertise with design thinking methods and processes
  • Exceptional verbal, writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to travel at least 10%, or as required by project work

Work from where you work best

If nothing else, Covid has revealed the amazing adaptability of our teams to work remotely while retaining a strong sense of collaboration. Post Covid, Artefact will continue in a hybrid work model with a combination of in-office and work-from-home in various mixes. So though in-person work or travel may be needed from time to time given client needs, relocating to Seattle is not a requirement for this position.
