Accounting Manager
Finance | Hybrid in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada | Full Time | From CAD $120,000 to CAD $135,000 per year
ROLE DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Accounting Manager
STATUS: Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Accounting
REPORTS TO: Corporate Controller
PURPOSE:
The Accounting Manager role is an exciting opportunity to be a key member of the Accounting Team within a fast-growing company. Reporting to the Corporate Controller, and working closely with the Senior Manager of Accounting, the Accounting Manager will perform month-end, quarter-end and year-end close activities, SEC/SOX/US GAAP compliance, and a variety of ad hoc accounting and corporate finance projects. This is a pivotal role on the corporate accounting team, requiring adaptability, attention to detail, and a proactive approach in a dynamic environment.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coordinate and manage the month-end close, including posting journal entries, updating balance sheet schedules and reconciliations.
• Prepare monthly and quarterly consolidated financial statements.
• Manage and process payroll for US, Canadian and UK employees, including state tax registrations and associated filings, including but not limited to WA L&I returns, Employer Health Tax (B.C.), ERS and P11D filings (UK). Address state tax enquiries. Coordinate with HR for the set-up of employee benefits.
• Generate monthly invoices for clinical trial site payments, track other site costs for month-end accruals
• Prepare working papers for external auditors
• Assist with maintaining SOX documentation for standard process and process changes and annual SAS 70 analysis for service providers.
• Provide leadership and change management to improve the accounting processes for compliance, accuracy, and quality of information.
• Provide accounting guidance and implementation of new accounting standards as they impact the Company as requested.
• Review and audit expense reports for accuracy and completeness before approval.
• Assist with filing of various tax returns, including but not limited to: GST, VAT, excise tax, personal property tax, franchise tax, 1099s.
• Assist with implementing effective internal controls, including a review of internal controls to meet Sarbanes Oxley requirements.
• Preparation of ad hoc accounting reports as required.
• Assists the VP, Finance and/or the CFO with developing new policies, processes and procedures as well as improving existing ones.
• Performs other general accounting duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:
• Diploma or degree in Accounting and have completed a recognized professional accounting program is required (CPA or equivalent). Candidates in the process of completing their qualifications may be considered if they have strong relevant work experience.
• Minimum of 4 years of accounting experience, preferably in a biotechnology environment.
• Accounting experience in a public company is beneficial.
• Knowledge of Sarbanes Oxley and SEC filing and compliance is an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Practical knowledge of accounting operations and strong ethics
• Monitor and maintain the efficient flow of documents and information
• Experience using and maintaining Great Plains
• Experience with SEC filing software such as Active Disclosure
• Experience with Concur Expense and Invoice is an asset
• Proficient in MS Office with advanced skills in Excel
• Experience working with foreign currency exchange
• Understanding of IFRS/US GAAP and statutory regulations
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Able to work well within a consultative, team-oriented environment, as well as the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
