Javascript Architect at Alpine Data

Engineering | San Francisco, CA | Full Time

Job Description

Javascript Architect at Alpine Data

Develop deep skills in big data at Alpine Data Labs, “one of the hottest machine-learning startups”, according to Business Insider, Datamation, and the Wall Street Journal. Alpine has raised almost $30M in funding to build "the next big data startup" (Forbes) and we have tripled our customer base in the last year alone.

About Us

Alpine Data Labs is a growing startup in San Francisco focusing on the difficult problem of transforming machine learning and Big Data into business value for our customers. Alpine’s software is unique with its intuitive flow-based visual programming environment for data science combined with the tools to manage and collaborate across the data lifecycle.

Data is doubling every two years – take the lead in making it valuable.

The Role

Alpine is looking for a lead Javascript developer to take charge of our large, legacy Backbone.js application. We have great customers, we have a product: but, we need to refactor our software to be simpler and easier to work with.

In general, Alpine is looking for engineers who are passionate about working with the latest technologies in analytics. We want engineers who are strongly motivated to help more and more people solve real-world problems with analytics, across industry and in the public sphere. Finally, we look for people who are willing to play a variety of roles, and to do what it takes to help the company and its customers succeed.

We iterate quickly, release often, and have a strong devops mentality. Our stack is HTML/CSS/Javascript using Backbone.js and Underscore.js for the front-end. Our back-end consists of  Ruby on Rails (using JRuby) which integrates with multiple data tier technologies including Postgresql, Hadoop, Spark.

What Will You Do?

You have worked with multiple (minimum, 2-5) Backbone.js codebases. You have strong opinions about how Backbone.js applications should be structured. You’re also familiar with Javascript tooling like npm, webpack, etc. You will take charge of our company’s Javascript strategy -- primarily leading the charge to upgrade and refactor a single large Backbone.js frontend. If this goes well, our company has other codebases as well which you could become involved with.

  • You have worked with a minimum of 2-5 Backbone.js codebases.

  • You have strong opinions about how Backbone codebases should be structured.

  • You like working with legacy code: testing, refactoring it to be more stable and easier to work with.

  • Preferably your experience with Backbone is recent, for example if you knew something about Marionette.js as well, that’d be a serious plus.

  • Experience with integrating back-end web services via REST-based APIs

  • Deep experience with Javascript testing frameworks. Our application currently has a huge Jasmine Javascript test suite. We have more of a need for someone to refactor (preferably deleting portions of) our test suite, than we have need of someone to write more tests.

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with Ruby-on-Rails

  • Experience with Java/Scala development

Working at Alpine

  • High visibility in a small, collaborative team

  • Cross-disciplinary interactions with a diverse, experienced staff

  • Competitive salary with excellent benefits and equity

  • A great office environment (∞ snacks, drinks, happy hour on Fridays)

  • Opportunities to contribute to Open Source (e.g., MLLib)

  • Weekly internal tech talks, monthly public meetups (SF Big Analytics, SF Machine Learning)
