Internal Application: VP of Engineering

Software Development | Edinburgh, United Kingdom | Full Time

Job Description

About us

We’re all about eliminating wasted effort.  We don’t believe people’s valuable time should be spent on tasks that can be done more efficiently and effectively by software.  So we created Braid, our AI-powered planning platform. Our customers are large Professional Services organisations and teams.  They use Braid to plan, schedule, and run their projects in a way that achieves the highest levels of customer satisfaction, profitability, and employee happiness.  Braid lets them work in a way they never previously thought possible! We are a fast growing company and this brings challenges, but they are exciting and each person learns from them. We have built a company which is a great place to work and we are a friendly bunch who believe in trust, autonomy and respect. Regardless of experience or role, everyone’s opinions matter.

The Role

The VP Engineering role is mission critical for Airts as we scale.  Our engineering team has been predominantly led by our CEO so far, but as we grow this is becoming untenable. To flourish in this role you must be a great engineer but more importantly an exceptional leader. Keeping our engineering team happy, developing and performing will be your #1 responsibility. You will report directly to the CEO and your role will be wide-ranging and varied, as would be expected at this level:

People Management

  • Running 1:1s and helping the team create and maintain PDPs
  • Day to day management of the team and prioritisation of tasks/projects
  • Owning the expansion of our engineering team, planning for current and future
  • demands, and identifying skill gaps
  • Maintaining our engineering skills matrix and performance review processes

Engineering & Quality

  • Making sure that we make good technical design decisions (both through your own input but more importantly by making sure appropriate processes are in place)
  • Coaching engineers to help them improve their technical skills
  • Participating in and facilitating technical and architectural discussions
  • Ensuring that the quality control processes in place are rigorous and fit for purpose
  • Keep yourself well-informed of best-practices and new tech trends
  • Working with our project leaders, business analysts, and salespeople to scope out new requirements
  • Input into roadmap prioritisation

  • Represent engineering at weekly management meetings
  • Recruiting for engineering talent at all levels
  • Contributing to strategic decisions on company-wide matters
  • Role-model our values and reinforce them
  • Raising the profile of Airts in the tech scene
  • Maintaining and adding to our company culture

This list is not exhaustive, and if you are right for the role, you will know most of what you need to do already.

About You

We are extremely selective when we hire into our engineering team, and we’ll be even more selective in who we choose to lead it.  We’re looking for someone very talented, who can lead the team now and has the potential to grow it to 10x the size. We’ll need you to tick the following boxes:

  • Great communication skills and a genuine passion for developing people
  • The mental agility to keep up with our engineers
  • Demonstrable ability to know a little about a lot of things, and to dive in deep when you need to

So far in our journey, we’ve done a great job of creating a workplace that is fun, friendly and encourages professional and personal growth.  You will help us maintain and enhance that and be a key part of our scale-up ambitions.
