Sr Manufacturing Systems Engineer
Manufacturing | Waltham, MA | Full Time
Why AeroShield might be great for you
AeroShield is a collaborative team of about 25 people bound by a mission to deliver innovative new materials to make our lives more sustainable. Too much energy is wasted by poor building insulation, especially poorly insulated windows and we are on a mission to change that. AeroShield is developing super-insulating, transparent inserts for windows based on aerogels, bringing state-of-the-art thermal comfort and energy efficiency into buildings at an affordable price.
You'll become part of a growing team and collaborating closely to tackle impactful challenges. In this environment, you'll be surrounded by talented individuals who excel in their roles and are supportive team players.
Our goal is to ensure that our super-insulating silica aerogel, the first truly transparent aerogel, is widely adopted to enable affordable, high-performance windows.
What we are looking for in a Sr. Manufacturing Systems Engineer
We're in search of someone who enjoys the autonomy offered by a dynamic small startup environment and takes the initiative to find new learning opportunities. This person should be highly organized and detail-oriented, have a passion for learning new skills and processes, and be able to work collaboratively with others.
We highly value a positive team culture and are looking for someone who wants to be part of continuously enhancing this culture—ideally playing an active role in this as the company grows. This person should embody AeroShield’s values of Understand & Improve, Value People, and Act Sustainably.
The Sr. Manufacturing Systems Engineer will assist in the design, integration, and scalable implementation of our novel aerogel composite production line. Their primary tasks will be to architect the material flow of the factory, design custom fixtures and electromechanical systems, and partner with our engineering team to solve the unique challenges of handling large-format glass and fragile aerogel materials. This role will be instrumental in integrating all process steps—from adhesive application and layup to the final composite cure —into a cohesive, robust system to scale our state-of-the-art technology.
The ideal candidate is a systems-thinker with significant experience using 3D CAD systems such as Fusion 360 (ideally), SolidWorks, or Inventor to turn a concept into reality. They enjoy working with their hands to build and test their designs, but are equally comfortable analyzing data to validate their work. They thrive in fast-paced environments where the results of their work play an important role in advancing new technologies to the market.
Details of position:
- Collaborate closely with a cross-functional team of engineers and vendors to assist in the design and integration of the entire aerogel composite production line.
- Architect the material flow and system integration for all composite manufacturing steps.
- Co-develop robust, scalable solutions for handling delicate materials, specifically large-format glass and thin aerogel sheets.
- Utilize 3D CAD software (Fusion 360 preferred) to create detailed designs for custom fixtures, ergonomic workstations, and electromechanical systems.
- Work hands-on in the lab and machine shop to build, fabricate, and assemble prototypes and production systems.
- Lead the installation, testing, and debugging phases for the systems and subsystems you help design.
- Apply analytical methods, such as Design of Experiments (DOE), to optimize processes and validate the performance of new equipment.
- Coordinate with external vendors for component sourcing and fabrication, managing timelines and costs for delegated projects.
- Assist in drafting relevant technical documentation, including assembly procedures, user manuals, and maintenance guides.
Bonus:
- Familiarity with industrial automation, controls (PLCs), and robotics in a manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with basic electrical wiring, pneumatics, and piping for system assembly and testing.
This role requires candidates to be on-site with most work being conducted in-person at our facility in Waltham, MA.
Qualifications
Many great team members do not fit a “standard blueprint”. Even if you do not fit all aspects listed below, but feel that you can contribute to AeroShield’s team, please do not hesitate to apply or to reach out with questions. Great candidates for this role enjoy learning quickly, are excited about new technologies, and possess a strong technical background through school and work experience.
- A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in a manufacturing or process engineering role, with a proven track record of bringing new systems from concept to production.
- Demonstrated expertise in designing, building, and commissioning integrated manufacturing systems, not just discrete pieces of equipment.
- High proficiency in 3D CAD for designing fixtures and machines; experience with Autodesk Fusion 360 is strongly preferred.
- Applied knowledge of analytical methods such as Design of Experiments (DOE) to solve problems and validate process improvements.
- A strong background in design-build projects with significant hands-on experience fabricating, assembling, and testing the systems you design.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with experience coordinating with external vendors and collaborating closely within a multi-disciplinary engineering team.
- A demonstrated potential for leadership, with a desire to formally mentor junior engineers and an interest in growing into roles with greater influence and responsibility.
Bonus skills:
- Direct experience handling highly fragile or brittle materials (e.g., glass, ceramics, porous films, aerogels).
- Familiarity with processes requiring controlled environments, such as humidity control or handling of solvent-based materials.
- Hands-on machine shop skills (mill, lathe, etc.) for rapid prototyping.
- Experience with industrial automation, PLCs, and robotics in a manufacturing setting.
- Knowledge of programming languages like Python for data analysis.
