AeroShield is making the next generation of energy-efficient windows possible by manufacturing the first ultra-clear, super-insulating aerogel sheets.

Windows are critical elements of comfort and productivity, but in the United States they cost $40 billion in heating and cooling energy. But what if we were no longer forced to choose between insulating our walls for indoor comfort and accessing natural daylight and beautiful outdoor views? New super-insulating material developed by AeroShield is designed to drop inside existing double-pane window manufacturing to create a window 50% more insulating – this can enable $10 billion in energy savings and >500 million tons of CO2 reduction (nearly half of current US homes’ annual emissions)!

We aren’t the only ones excited: founded out of MIT in 2019, AeroShield has established manufacturing R&D activities in Hyde Park (Boston), MA since March of 2020. The company has raised over $7 M in funding to begin producing prototypes and is working with 4 DOE national labs and has earned recognition in Forbes 30 Under 30: Energy

Position Overview: Senior Application / Product Engineer

This position offers an exciting opportunity to join the core AeroShield R&D team led by Founder & CTO, Dr. Kyle Wilke, to develop and optimize a scalable and economic process for integrating our material into windows.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with multi-component products and/or insulated glass unit manufacturing and be ready to get hands-on with customers to develop the first product that integrates our ground-breaking material. We seek a dynamic engineer who wants to help understand our customers in order to inform and lead the development and testing of AeroShield insulated glass units and windows. We seek a dynamic engineer who can work directly with customers to understand their product and process requirements to inform AeroShield’s development, testing, and deployment.

Within the first 12 months you will:

  • Lead the design & development of our product and its integration with customers’ processes
  • Support and design experiments to optimize product design based on customer feedback
  • Manage quality of samples, including key metrics for monitoring product quality
  • Work closely with strategic customers to develop material handling and manufacturing processes to integrate AeroShield’s product into a full window
  • Support marketing to educate prospective customers on the performance and cost value of integrating the AeroShield product
  • Develop key metrics to guide and monitor the deployment of pilots at customer sites

Background & Experience

We are looking for a candidate with at least 5 years of product or material development experience, but candidates with less experience are also encouraged to apply. The ideal person will have the following experience and qualities:

  • BS in Engineering or Materials with at least 5 years in Industrial Products (Innovation / New Product experience preferred)
  • Hands-on product experience with porous or fragile materials and/or transparent insulating materials
  • Ability to work with and understand customer processes, as well as educate external stakeholders on any technical aspects necessary to overcome adoption barriers (e.g. working with industry associations to develop test protocols for a product integrating AeroShield’s material)
  • Ability to engage with various external component suppliers to manage and ensure quality standards are maintained
  • Ability to proactively identify potential assembly or handling opportunities and risks in the insulated glass manufacturing process
  • Understanding of the various insulated glass unit (IGU) material components and their unique properties including but not limited to: 
    • uncoated and low-e coated glass
    • primary and secondary sealants
    • metal or warm edge spacer systems
    • argon or krypton gas fills
    • painted aluminum muntin bars
    • clips or mounting hardware
