Scientist II, Fermentation - AbSci

AbSci is a venture-backed biotechnology company located in a newly constructed, state-of-the art laboratory in charming downtown Vancouver, WA. We are currently seeking a motivated individual with a strong hands-on background in microbial fermentation process development to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for scientific innovation, exhibit adept technical skills, and be comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment where research targets can change from day to day.

The Scientist II will play an integral part in the continued development of AbSci’s core technology at the fermentation scale. Main responsibilities include working with Senior Scientists to design and execute scalable fermentation experiments with the goal of achieving high cell densities and maximizing yields of recombinantly expressed proteins. Responsible for aiding in and supervising bench-scale fermentation runs and analyzing results in collaboration with and under the general guidance of a Senior Scientist. Capable of working with a high degree of independence. This position may have supervisory responsibilities.  Candidate is someone who is enthusiastic about fermentation, exhibits meticulous attention to detail, and an eagerness to learn new techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and help execute bioreactor experiments and report deviations and observations to senior team members
  • Compile and report data on fermentation runs and collaborate to design experiments
  • Troubleshoot equipment and processes
  • Perform data analysis of scientific results and troubleshoot unexpected experimental outcomes in coordination with other scientists
  • Manage multiple independent experiments concurrently including scheduling equipment and preparing reagents
  • Perform laboratory tests on specialized analytical equipment (e.g. HPLC)
  • Assist in training junior members of the team in laboratory techniques and operation of equipment
  • Document experimental results and maintain an up-to-date electronic lab notebook
  • Observe and comply with all safety standards and procedures

 

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology or related field
  • 2-5 years of directly relevant experience in an industry setting
  • Proficiency in aseptic technique and microbial culturing
  • Deep understanding of bench-scale fermentation units (Sartorius, Applikon, DASGIP) and associated control software
  • Experience with microbial systems, especially E. coli, for protein expression in bioreactors
  • Expertise with fermentation-related equipment such as HPLC, spectrophotometers, and shake flask culturing
  • Hands-on experience with bioreactor operation including setup, monitoring, sampling, and cleaning
  • Understanding of statistics and statistical software (JMP)
  • Experience in protein engineering, molecular biology and cell physiology/metabolism a plus
