Research Associate, Fermentation

Job Description

AbSci is an early stage biotechnology company located at the beautiful OTRADI Bioscience Incubator in Portland’s South Waterfront.  We are currently in a growth phase and are seeking a motivated individual with a strong hands-on background in fermentation process development to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for scientific innovation, exhibit adept technical skills, and be comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment where research targets can change from day to day.

The Fermentation Research Associate will play a significant role in our upstream process development. Core responsibilities include executing bench-scale fermentations with the goal of achieving high cell densities and maximizing yields of recombinantly expressed proteins. This position will be responsible for independently operating bioreactors at small scale (1L or below), preparing media, processing samples, and analyzing results. Candidate is someone who is enthusiastic about laboratory bench work, exhibits meticulous attention to detail, and an eagerness to learn new techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Clean, setup, maintain and operate bench-scale bioreactors
  • Execute bioreactor experiments and report deviations and observations to senior team members
  • Compile and report data on fermentation runs and collaborate with team members to design experiments
  • Prepare media and stock solutions in support of fermentation experiments
  • Work effectively in a laboratory environment through understanding of chemical and biological lab principles
  • Review and follow standard operating procedures to obtain reproducible results
  • Troubleshoot equipment and processes

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology or related field
  • Minimum 2 years research experience required in an academic or industry (preferred) setting
  • Proficiency in aseptic technique and microbial culturing
  • Familiarity with bench-scale fermentation units (Sartorius, Applikon, DASGIP) and associated control software
  • Familiarity with fermentation-related equipment such as HPLC, spectrophotometers, and shake flask culturing
  • Hands-on experience with bioreactor operation including setup, monitoring, sampling, and cleaning
  • Understanding of statistics and statistical software (JMP, DesignExpert)
  • Experience in protein engineering, molecular biology and cell physiology/metabolism a plus
  • Candidate must be comfortable using electronic lab notebook
